May is national walking month

  • 2 min read

“Walking is good for our minds, our bodies and our neighbourhoods and has helped us stay active and connected this past year. As well as the mental and physical health benefits, we have seen the improvements to congestion and air quality when people drive less. That’s why we want people to #WalkThisMay. By walking the roadmap out of the pandemic, we can emerge healthier and happier.”

-Mary Creagh, Chief Executive, Living Streets

Through the pandemic many of us have turned to walking as our daily activity. Statistics show that in February 2021 during lockdown, there was a huge upturn in walking. There were 6.3 times more walkers in London compared to the same time last year! (BBC News, 2021)

May is national walking month, and we want to share some of the benefits to walking in order to support walkthismay!

Walking is hugely beneficial towards our health, it:

  • increases cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness
  • reduces risk of heart disease and stroke
  • improves management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes
  • stronger bones and improved balance
  • increases muscle strength and endurance
  • reduces body fat.

Not only are there numerous health benefits when walking, there are also many other benefits.

  • Improves mental health
  • Saves money
  • Cuts your carbon footprint
  • Reduces traffic and congestion

Livingstreets.org.uk is a UK Charity that has a mission to achieve a better walking environment and inspire people to walk more.

Walking is good for our minds, our bodies and our neighbourhoods and has been a lifeline during the past year, helping people stay active and connected. That’s why we want everyone to keep going and pledge to #WalkThisMay!
